Rimini State Archives

For the conservation of archives and documents produced by State organs

The Rimini State Archives (Archivio di Stato di Rimini) represents the heart of the province's documentary memory. As a local office of the Ministry of Culture, the institute’s fundamental task is to preserve and protect the archives and documents produced by the peripheral organs of the State operating—or having operated in the past—within the Rimini territory. Its official establishment dates back to 1 January 1999, when it inherited the vast heritage of the pre-existing State Archive Section following the creation of the Province of Rimini, which became operational in 1995.

The Venue: A Blend of History and Architecture
Located in the heart of the historic town centre, the State Archives are housed in charming premises that once formed part of the monastic complex adjacent to the small Church of San Bernardino. Built in 1759 based on a design by the renowned architect Giovanni Francesco Buonamici, the church lends the site an atmosphere of solemnity and history, making it an architectural as well as an administrative landmark for the entire neighbourhood.

Heritage and Services
In addition to official documents from state institutions, the Archives safeguard a precious treasure trove of private and family records, acquired over time through bequests and donations, often predating the establishment of the institute itself. It is a place of study open to the public, where unique sources can be consulted for historical, genealogical, or administrative research. Furthermore, it houses a library that is part of the National Library Service (SBN). The institution's commitment extends beyond mere preservation: the Archives function as a vibrant cultural centre, regularly organising exhibitions and events to promote knowledge of the local historical heritage.
