Built in 1547, it gave the square its current shape and size. Rebuilt by Giovan Francesco Buonamici in 1759, the upper part was demolished in the earthquake of 1875 and restored in 1933.

In addition to the clock, since 1750 the tower also displays a dial with a perpetual calendar, zodiac movements and moon phases.
