Part of the historic centre of Rimini, Borgo San Giuliano and the North Sea Park (Parco del Mare Nord) are Limited Traffic Zones (ZTL) and can only be accessed by authorised vehicles. So when access is forbidden for any unauthorised vehicle, be prepared to pay a fine.
Rules in Rimini historic centre and Borgo San Giuliano
Since July 2025, a new access control system has been in operation in the historic centre and Borgo San Giuliano. Following a testing phase during which no fines were issued, enforcement through the electronic access gates began on 29 January 2026.
The new Limited Traffic Zone is divided into two areas, “Historic Centre” and “Borgo San Giuliano”, monitored by thirteen electronic gates. Holders of a permit for the Historic Centre may pass through all the gates within that area, but not those in Borgo San Giuliano, and vice versa. Unauthorised vehicles passing through the electronic gates during restricted hours are automatically subject to an €83 fine under the Italian Highway Code. Should you require short-term access, temporary permits must be requested and obtained in advance via the official channels to ensure your vehicle is registered on the system before passing through the gates.

Access for hotel guests in the historic centre:
Access is allowed to vehicles of guests who have a booking in hotels situated in the historic centre: the pedestrian area - AP - and limited traffic zone - Z.T.L.
- the access to the vehicles will be granted through comunication of the vehicle licence plate by the hotel direction to Rimini Municipality.
ZTL (Limited Traffic Zone) - NORTH SEA PARK
Since 2023, the ZTL of the PARCO DEL MARE NORD is active during the holiday season so to access the area it is necessary to have an access permit.
In the period from June 1st to the second Sunday of September the ZTL is active every day, 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, with the exception of the sections between via Polazzi and via Palotta (between Viserbella and Viserba) and between via Borghesi and via Verenin Grazia (Viserbella), where access is forbidden only in the evening, from 8.00pm to midnight.

The permits issued in the 4 areas allow access only to the gates of the area in which the applicant is located.
Access to the ZTL in Rivabella, Viserba, Viserbella and Torre Pedrera is reserved for residents and registered temporary residents, non-residents with a parking space, and hotel guests, exclusively for loading and unloading luggage or reaching the car parks of accommodation facilities and businesses located within the area.
Mopeds and motorcycles are permitted to travel within the Parco del Mare Nord ZTL, except along the seafront section between Viale Bologna and Viale Sante Polazzi, where the restriction applies 24 hours a day, and along the sections between Via Tolemaide and Viale Proteo, Via Grazia Verenin and Viale Bologna, Via Polazzi and Via Palotta, and Viale Adige and Via Longarone, where the restriction applies from 8 p.m. to midnight.
From 1 June 2026, the new electronic access gate on Viale Porto Bardia operated in pre-enforcement mode. Following the completion of this phase, full enforcement began on 1 July 2026: since that date, unauthorised vehicles passing through the gate while the ZTL is in operation have been automatically detected, and a fine notice is issued for each violation.
Access for Hotel and Accommodation Guests
Access to hotel facilities is permitted for vehicles of guests heading to hotels and other accommodation facilities located in pedestrian areas (A.P.) and limited traffic zones (Z.T.L.). The hosting establishment will enable vehicle access by registering the license plate number provided by the guest through the portal made available by the Municipality of Rimini. It is also possible to request an exemption retroactively, within 72 hours of entry. For tourists staying in rental homes, the property owners are responsible for independently requesting vehicle access authorization for their tenants.
