Comics and the Shoah. Images in the service of memory

from Saturday 27 January to Sunday10 March 2024
Castel Sismondo (Sala Isotta), piazza Malatesta - Rimini historic centre
Exhibition as part of the Holocaust Memorial Education events

An incomparable historical event, the Shoah occupies a prominent place in contemporary collective memory. Comics and graphic novels have also tackled the subject, not without caution, mistakes and hesitations, sometimes with brilliance.
Since when, and how, have comic book and graphic novel authors taken up the subject? How did censorship intervene on some publications during the Second World War? How are testimonies transmitted? How do stories develop according to the political, social and aesthetic references of our time, while certain forms of anti-Semitism persist?
The exhibition attempts to answer these questions by analysing various works published from the 1930s to the present day in different countries, in particular the United States, Japan, France, Belgium and Italy.
Among the many works on display some are cult favourites such as Captain America and Mickey Mouse, the fascist magazine il Balilla, the History of the 3 Adolfs by the Japanese Osamu Tezuka, the adventures of the Belgian bellboy Spirou, the disruptive Maus by Art Spiegelman, but also various lesser-known publications, often produced together with the last witnesses.
Entrance is free. For groups of more than 10 people and for classes booking is compulsory, with a guided tour organised by the Institute for the History of the Resistance and Contemporary Age of the Province of Rimini (informazionieprenotazioni@gmail.com; tel. 0541 24730).

Appointment by LEGIO XIII Gemina

'Alea iacta est' with these words, Caius Julius Caesar, in January 49 B.C. together with the very faithful XIII Legio Gemina crossed the Rubicon, the river that separated the borders of the territories of Urbe from Cisalpine Gaul, so changing history. Travelling with the Three Wise Men on Epiphany Day

Saturday 6 January 2024
Rimini, historic centre from Tiberius bridge to Malatesta Temple
Rimini, The World's Longest New Year's Eve

On Epiphany Day, Rimini hosts a great event narrating the arrival of the Magi.
Thanks to the involvement of many groups from Rimini and hundreds of foreigners resident in Rimini, coming from Peru, Venezuela, Hungary, Senegal, Romania, the Philippines, China, etc., a richly costumed procession with traditional music, dances, and songs will wind its way through Rimini's symbolic locations to celebrate the arrival of the mysterious Kings from the East and involve everyone present in a festive moment.
The arrival of the Three Wise Men is a festivity celebrated in many countries around the world, which the little ones await to see Balthasar, Melchior and Gasparre in person, so charming in their glittering robes, surrounded by a court of curious exotic animals and always gracious with gifts for the children.
The Three Kings arrives on board of a trabaccolo, a typical local boat, at the Bridge of Tiberius, where the meeting with King Herod takes place. The Three Kings aim at the Comet Star and the procession continues on foot through the historic centre, stopping in Piazza Cavour 'on the square of Bethlehem' and then along Via IV Novembre where 'The Three Kings present their gifts' and finally arrive in the Cathedral Basilica, Rimini's Malatesta Temple, to 'adore the King of Kings'.
In a particularly evocative festive atmosphere, a sign of unity and brotherhood for all peoples.
A production by Made Officina Creativa, executive organisation by the Ponte dei Miracoli Association, in collaboration with the Municipality and Diocese of Rimini.

from 5 pm to 7.30pm
