Rimini wears pink on the occasion of the Giro d'Italia, for 103 years the main Italian cycling event. The Giro d’Italia is more than ‘just’ a sporting event: it’s also a journey through the landscape, the territory and the regional communities of a wonderful country.
The 11th leg of the tour is dedicated to Rimini,on the occasion of the celebrations for the centenary of Fellini's birth.
More than 30 years after the last time, Rimini is approaching this event full of enthusiasm in an increasingly bike friendly territory, presenting infrastructures and services designed not only for athletes and champions but also for bike enthusiasts.
The pink caravan of the Giro d’Italia is arriving in Rimini on 14 October, a sprint which is a sort of turning point for the competition, with the arrival of the eleventh stage, Porto Sant’Elpidio - Rimini.
Rimini welcomes the cyclists of the race in a city painted in pink. From the port of Rimini where a giant inscription with 'RIMINI' written on it, greets the Giro, to the TNT that will be mounted on the floating bridge with the words 'RIMINI❤BIKE', or the Piazzale Fellini roundabout which welcomes the two-wheeled champions with the installation of a large bike, symbol of the Giro. Also the beach greets the arrival of the cyclists. Piacere Spiaggia Rimini together with Bagno 26 welcome them with two maxi writings created with one of the most recognizable symbols of the city: the sun umbrellas. The former is set up between beach resorts 23 and 26 and the latter between beach resorts 57 and 59. A special welcome that will not fail to capture the attention of the two helicopters of RAI (Italian television) that will follow the entire race from above.
The monuments will also be dressed in pink: starting from the day before the arrival of the race, Castel Sismondo, the fountain of the Four Horses and the new roundabouts will be illuminated in pink to keep the expectation of the arrival of the eleventh stage, 182 Km, which runs along the sea of the Marche and Romagna regions in an almost completely flat section.
Except for a short climb of Monte San Bartolo, going up from Pesaro, a series of easy ups and downs between Misano Monte, Coriano, Cerasolo and Santarcangelo will lead the athletes to Rimini. In the last kilometers of the stage, the roads of Rimini will be the most demanding stretch. On wide and well-paved roads, the route faces a succession of changes of direction with a bottleneck at about 2500 m from the finish and a big turning through two wide curves, the last of which enters the final straight, the Murri seafront, which cuts through the finish line in Piazza Alberto Marvelli.
The athletes of the Giro will whiz through the streets of Rimin on Wednesday 14 Octobe at around 4 pm. and from the village that accompanies the champions stage after stage, the Rai2 TV programme 'Process to the stage' will be broadcast live soon after the race around from 4.30 pm: the protagonists of the race, technicians, accredited journalists, will alternate on the stage to talk about race tactics and relive the emotions of the tour.
See the city route. To allow the passage of the cyclists, this stretch of the route in Rimini will be closed to traffic from 2 pm to 5 pm (with the exception of Lungomare Murri, which will remain closed until evening)
