The first performance of the ballet - music by Tchaikovsky and choreographed by Marius Petipa on commission of the Prince Vsevolozhsky, superintendent of the imperial theaters in St. Petersburg - took place at the Teatro Mariinsky in Petersburg 16th January 1890, with the presence of the Tsar, obtaining a great success.
