Turandot by Giacomo Puccini

Friday 5 and Sunday 7 April 2024
Teatro Amintore Galli, piazza Cavour, 22 - Rimini historic centre
Amintore Galli Theatre's 2024 Opera Season

The playbill for the 2024 opera season celebrates the centenary of Giacomo Puccini's death with the first performance on the programme, Turandot, the composer's last masterpiece inspired by Gasparo Gozzi's oriental fairy tale in the staging imagined by Giuseppe Frigeni, who signs the direction, scenes, lights and choreography.
The show is conducted by Marco Guidarini on the podium of the Orchestra dell'Emilia-Romagna Arturo Toscanini, with the Lyric Choir of Modena and the Municipal Theatre of Piacenza.
The director has imagined a Turandot where 'it is the music that dictates the direction. And opera is not theatre with music, but music that becomes theatre, imposing its own dramatic rhythms and dimensions'.
For the director, Turandot, more than a love story, is 'the rise of the social ambition of the arrogant Calaf, revealing macho cynicism'.
On stage in the main roles France Dariz (Turandot), Mikheil Sheshaberidze (Calaf), Jaquelina Livieri (Liù), Fabio Previati (Ping), Saverio Pugliese (Pang), Matteo Mezzaro (Pong), Giacomo Prestia (Timur), Raffaele Feo (Altoum).

The ‘fogheraccia’ – St. Joseph bonefire

Monday 18 March 2024 > postponed to Saturday 23 March
Rimini, free beach - Piazzale Boscovich
The traditional bonfires on the free beach in piazzale Boscovich

That of ‘fogheraccia’ is a very ancient custom, a propitiatory rite for an abundant harvest, which is linked to the Roman calendar, according to which the year began in March, dedicated to Mars, god of agriculture, as well as of war .
In Romagna they are traditionally called Focheracce or Fugarine di San Giuseppe, because they are held on the occasion of the feast of St. Joseph and of all fathers.
The biggest bonfire in Rimini is on the free beach in Marina Centro, near the canal port area. Here from the afternoon a market of various kinds animates the promenade with colorful stalls (from around 5 pm). Turning on of the fogheraccia at about 9 pm.

And please stop crying – Photographic exhibition dedicated to Giulietta Masina

from Thursday 22 February to Sunday 14 April 2024
Palazzo del Fulgor, piazza San Martino - Rimini centro storico
Mostra fotografica al Palazzo del Fulgor - Fellini Museum

Italo Calvino spoke of a 'Masina zone' in Fellini's cinema, referring to that dimension of the Rimini director's imagination that most recalls the circus and its figures. Of those figures, Masina was the most inspired and gifted interpreter: she possessed their lightness, vitality, grace and candour.
With La strada, in 1957, Fellini won the first of his five Oscars and at only 37 years of age he entered the Olympus of the greats of cinema, but it was Giulietta Masina with her interpretation of Gelsomina who conquered and moved audiences all over the world.
Charlie Chaplin recognised her affinity with his Tramp, and among the spectators in those distant 1950s was a young Argentinean named Mario Bergoglio who, decades later and having become Pope in the meantime, would remember that character whose gaze "knows how to capture in winter what is already spring".
Only one year goes by and Fellini wins his second Oscar with Le notti di Cabiria. Again Giulietta Masina as the protagonist, perhaps in the role she most loved and in which she perhaps most recognised herself. To her, whom Fellini often portrays in The Book of Dreams with the features of a fairy, the Fellini Museum dedicates a photographic exhibition.
Seventy years after La strada and just a few weeks after the thirtieth anniversary of her death, from Thursday 22 February till Monday 1 April, 34 photos from the Penzo and Reporters Associati / Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna archives is on show on the second and third floors of the Palazzo del Fulgor. These 34 photos come from the sets of the seven Fellini films in which Masina starred: in addition to the two films already mentioned, there are also Luci del varietà, Lo sceicco bianco, Il bidone, Giulietta degli spiriti and Ginger and Fred.
