January 20th: Happy birthday, Federico. The programme of the day

Kai Leclerc in Fellini up side down

A moment of celebration in a city pervaded by music, art, shows and lights inspired by Fellini's films; large hot air balloons illuminated among the buildings of Piazza Cavour, illuminated sentences of the director that appear along the streets of the historic center, markets, carousels and ice rinks that recall those circus atmospheres that Fellini put on his films, all that you can find in Rimini until January 20th, the day of the great birthday party of the Maestro.

Monday 20 January, on the exact day of the centenary of Federico Fellini’s birth, at 21:30, Maestro Vince Tempera will go on stage at the Galli Theatre to say “Happy Birthday, Federico” through the music that immortalised Fellini’s films. Maestro Tempera will be conducting the SymphonItaly Orchestra and OLES from Lecce and Salento in a programme that will include performances of the original scores of Fellini’s most famous films. “I will be starting with La Strada”, said Tempera, “which is perhaps the theme from Rota’s music that I love most, as well as the best way to open a journey into the dreams and the magical world of Fellini. The music serves to remember”. The concert is part of the events under the umbrella of Fellini 100, a logo that will be used on the upcoming celebrations for the centenary.

A street party with circus and large version of Fellini’s favourite dessert
The most awaited moment will of course be the big street party in the city square on the day of Fellini’s actual birthday, in the afternoon of 20 January. At 17:30, a parade will set out from the Castello Malatestiano, home to the future Fellini Museum, with performers accompanied by the irresistible music of the Musicians of San Crispino, and a procession of children with drawings of their own dreams as their way of paying tribute to the most visionary dreamer of all. This celebratory procession will reach Piazza Cavourat 18:00 for a performance by internationally famous acrobat, Kai Leclerc, with the show Fellini up side down, which aims to surprise the public by showing some of the most famous scenes from Fellini’s films, upside down. Through the dreams and memories of these masterpieces, the Canadian clown, known the world over for his ‘upturned’ walks, aims to commemorate Fellini’s magical creativity. The public will be accompanied on this fantastic journey not just by music, but also by lots of dramatic references… upside down. Leclerc will be joined by Elisa Barucchieri, exceptional aerial dancer who will be bringing her performance from the air to the ground and then from the ground to the air. Together with the Compagnia Fidelio, Barucchieri will alternate with and cross into Leclerc’s performances to take the spectators into a dreamlike world, where imaginative and exciting choreography will provide the perfect way to re-evoke the atmospheres that Fellini loved to create.

At the end of the show, still in Piazza Cavour, the cutting of the monumental Cake of Dreams is set for 19:00. This immense cake, – about 2 metres high – is being made by master pastry chef, Roberto Rinaldini who has personally reinterpreted the director’s favourite dessert: Zuppa inglese Fellini 100.

Also on 20 January, from 10:00 until 14:00, Castel Sismondo will be hosting Poste Italiane as it franks the newly issued first stamp dedicated to the centenary of Fellini’s birth.

For the occasion, on Monday January 20tgh the Museum of the City and the Domus del Chirurgo will remain open from 9.30am to 7.30pm, and the Visitor Center from 2pm to 10pm.
